I am an itinerant deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) teacher who serves just over 40 students across all grade levels (K-12) in two large school corporations. All students have varying degrees of hearing losses and use different means of communicating (English, sign language, etc.). Whatever method of communication they use, they all have one thing in common - a hearing loss that benefits from a visual means of learning. Since these students are situated in an auditory environment, reliant on the ability to hear, they have to exert more energy to obtain information. Oftentimes they work so hard receiving the information that they are too tired to process it, thereby producing frustration. Visual means of displaying information in a regular education classroom is encouraged by the DHH teacher, but not always applied. An iPad would provide an optimal visual learning experience that is free of frustration.
