Students at Tegeler Career Center are 7th through 12th graders who attend a Title I school in Texas. Ninety percent of the students are economically disadvantaged and more than 20% live below the poverty level. Academically, 50% of the students are at risk and struggle in their core classes. The majority of the students are Hispanic. Many are bilingual and have limited English proficiency. Some students are new to the U.S. and speak no English. These students have a burning desire to learn new things. Academic vocabulary in their core subjects is a huge challenge. They are very loving students and show their love the best way they know how. Transportation is another challenge they struggle with. Keeping them after school for tutoring help is not accomplished because of transportation issues. Overall, our kids want and desire to learn more to become life-long learners.
