Our students need interesting, engaging biographies about American historical figures and texts about community helpers to share and discuss their new community and country together in groups. By exploring country and community in reading groups, in which each student actually has a book, the students will share the journey of American personalities and connect them to their personal experience. In a culminating presentation, My Country, My Culture, the students groups present about their cultures with connections to their new culture. They set goals about the future and choose careers based upon their interests and their aspirations. In making connections and identifying differences between American culture and their cultures the students may internalize their learning. At a basic level students develop survival skills to identify the helpers in their community and the people who shaped America's values.
