We use literature as both a lens into the world outside us and as a mirror to reflect our own experiences. I would like to ensure that my classroom library provides a multicultural and diverse range of literature to help my students identify with and learn about a variety of cultures and heritage. I strongly believe that reading and learning about the experiences of others helps students become more empathetic and understanding to lives that differ from theirs. We are requesting books to provide my students opportunities to read and experience a variety of literature that represents diverse cultures and heritage and highlights the universality of the human experience. It is my goal to stock a classroom library with books to put in the hands of students that showcase characters of color and are by authors of color. I will use a variety of culturally diverse picture books to open up discussions as we explore topics of stereotypes and biases as they relate to our social justice units and beyond. In addition, non-fiction and fiction books in the classroom library will include both people who look like the students (mirrors) and those who do not (windows). These books will help my students explore both who they are themselves and help them understand the world around them. This will encourage students to gain a broader world view and increase empathy.
