My sweet and diverse first graders are full of potential and are eager to learn. They live in a high poverty area, our free and reduced lunch rate is 98%. Almost 45% of my students are English language learners. Many of the kids have parents who do not speak English. Most come from single parent homes. These hard working parents often lack the time, energy, or English to assist in building their child's reading skills.
