It is 2020, and the pandemic rages on! Students at Lake Ridge Elementary, like others around the country, have been schooling virtually since March. While they, with the incredible efforts and support of parents and teachers, are making some academic progress given the circumstances, much ground remains to be covered. Many of my students are losing valuable literacy skills due to a lack of resources to maintain their reading fluency. Though we encourage them to use public libraries or read digital texts, our success is limited. The consensus is that books you can hold in your hand are more fun to read. Alas, my students no longer have easy access to such books. The impact of reading fluency on student success is well-documented, as are the positive effects of parental involvement in reading with their children. To take advantage of the time students have at home during this quarantine to increase opportunities for students, together with their parents, to engage with books, let's send them some books, please. We can promote literacy in these low-income communities by distributing books to our students while they are at home. As a school, we continue to promote reading engagement with competitions and prizes, but we need books for students to read. Your donations will help them maintain the literacy skills we so carefully cultivated. You are a hero for supporting this campaign!
