My project is based upon two common threads, both true for each of the diverse learners who access my classroom. First is the universal benefit of picture books frequently and repeatedly read aloud in class. Shared stories create shared experiences and understandings for a community. Picture books are uniquely able to benefit students on a variety of levels. Not only can they improve students' language development, listening and reading comprehension, and recognition of literary concepts, but also--when chosen carefully--they allow students to recognize themselves, to understand others, and to step into different worlds. I have spent the last year working to curate a list of high-quality and diverse picture books for read-alouds in the interest of meeting these various ends. Your support will allow me to have these books on hand at all times, for students to read and re-read, building their literacy as well as their social understanding. The second thread is that students feel empowered to engage in their learning when they have an influence over their classroom environment. My classroom setup is clearly defined for our various purposes but it is also customizable for individual preferences through flexible seating choices. Your support will allow me to offer three more sturdy options for my learners.
