The children I service are typically African-American and Hispanic, from low-income families. They are bright and eager to learn, but poverty limits their access to experiences and resources that most other kids enjoy. As a result, their language skills, vocabulary, and the ability to understand and put together words and sentences are behind. Many struggle with labeling everyday items, asking questions, and having simple conversations. I gave each kindergartner a basic language concepts screener this October and only 8 out of 24 students demonstrated age-level language skills. The majority of the class needs extra language help, and early intervention is critical.
