My project will strengthen students' decoding skills, helping them shift from "learning to read" to "reading to learn." The lesson is designed to happen at a fast pace, lasting no more than 5-7 minutes. This keeps students engaged and addresses different learning styles. Rime Magic teaches students to look for the natural segmentation patterns in words, allowing them to quickly decode words and comprehend text. They are learning to look at and hear onsets (beginning sounds) and endings to key parts of a word (rime). For example, the /ip/ in slippery or the /at/ in splattered. Teaching phonics this way helps students see the letter-sound correspondences and recognize patterns within seconds when reading a variety of texts. With repeated practice, students pick up the pace and the transfer to independent reading becomes automatic. Their confidence soars and helps enhance comprehension and fluency.
