My ninth grade reading students are the most driven and special young people I have ever met. Although many of my students have obstacles facing them everyday-some of which I cannot imagine- they still hold incredible attitudes towards learning. One of my students truly illustrated the determination and drive of my student population. My student was having trouble with falling asleep in class, and I had her come by after school to discuss the issue. She started profusely apologizing and explaining that she has been tired from having to pick up extra shifts at the Publix Grocery store and she has been taking care of her 11 siblings after school. She explained that she was going to do whatever she could to stay away in class, because she knew it was important. These students have such heart and deserve every opportunity possible in the world- and I want to help them get those opportunities. It is my job as her teacher to help make reading as engaging and enjoyable as possible.
