I teach in a public school, in a third grade classroom in Oregon. My students range from students who read at the beginning kindergarten level to students who read at the 4th grade level. This is an energetic group of students who, for the most part, don't seem to have the love of reading naturally. I have about 3 students who choose to read on their own when they have free time. In a class of 31, I am saddened that so many of these children do not turn to reading for enjoyment. I am making it my job to find authors, genres and books these students love to read during silent reading time. One way of helping these students grow as readers is by allowing them to read what they are most interested in. This is where Investigations comes in. We just began this week, and the excitement when I handed out all the books I brought from the public library was so incredible I knew it was well worth the time I put in finding books on all the topics these students want to read about.
