What is aquaponics? Aquaponics refers to any system that combines conventional aquaculture (raising aquatic animals such as snails, fish, crayfish or prawns in tanks) with hydroponics (cultivating plants in water) in a symbiotic environment. Engineering students will learn the concepts of both aquaculture and hydroponics in a unique hands-on approach to aquaponics in our new capstone course at our school for the next year. Not only will they learn to grow plants without the use of soil, they will learn how to test the water for the correct ph levels and acidity. They will also learn how to raise aquatic animals.
