My students do not like to read unless they are interested in the novel in front of them. Their reading levels are rather low. Many of the students are in English and Intensive Reading because of the low reading levels. Our school is a Public High School for grades 6-12. Over half the population is on either free or reduced lunch. My students want to be successful, but how can they when the materials we have are all torn and missing pages? The students will become better readers if they have novels that are in great shape so that they can follow along as the teacher reads to them. They enjoy when the teacher reads to them but by having new books, I feel that they will try ever harder to learn to read.
