My 35 fourth grade students attend an urban, high ESOL populated, Title 1 (over 90% of students on free/reduced price lunches) elementary school in Florida. Most of the students come eager and excited to learn everyday. Although the students are highly motivated to learn, they still lag behind academically with their peers due to their low social economic status and largely immigrant upbringings. Many of my students enter school without speaking English. Most parents can not reinforce the English language at home and cannot afford to purchase learning devices such as iPads to supplement their learning. Some do not even have Internet access at home or a working printer. These students already have a huge disadvantage due to their background, and thus, the learning gap for them is more difficult to close.
