My students live in a community that is very economically diverse. While many of the people in our community are middle class, my school serves an area that is often referred to as "poor". Currently, 52.5% of my students are labeled as economically disadvantaged. These students are all on free and reduced lunch programs, which include breakfast at school. If it weren't for the food programs at our school, many of our students would not eat. In addition, my students are culturally diverse when compared to our community as a whole. Of our school's 223 students, 10.8% are Hispanic, 15.2% are Asian or Pacific Islander, 7.2% are African American, and 1.8% are American Indian or Alaska Native. 19.7% of our school is identified as English Language Learners. In addition, 29.1% of my students are identified as Students with Disabilities. When you look at the statistics, it's not hard to see how my students are behind in their technological skills that are necessary for the 21st century.
