The students I service come to my seventh grade Reading Plus classroom with failure already etched in their minds. My classroom consist of students who have failed the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) during the 2012-2013 academic school year. On top of having a general education reading/language arts teacher, these students have had one of their electives taken away from them in order to be placed in my classroom. The children that come to me read anywhere from a third grade reading level to an eighth grade reading level yet lack comprehension. I also service students who have been diagnosed with dyslexia, ADHD, autism, the visually and hearing impaired, etc. Currently I teach on a Title I campus, which means the school has been designated as "in need of improvement". Resources on my campus are very limited and therefore challenge me as a teacher to create engaging, relatable yet rigorous lessons for my children that somehow foster a passion for reading.
