Our middle school is currently in its second year and struggling to create the kind of environment that can drastically impact our students' life trajectory. We serve a lower-income community where the more affluent public schools far out-perform their lower socioeconomic counterparts only a few blocks away. Because most come to us 3-4 grade levels behind, our students attend our school for longer school days and a longer school year (almost 10 hours per day!) to try to make up multiple grade-levels of knowledge in one school year. They work hard to try to get on track before entering high school, to give themselves a chance to attend a four-year university; if they succeed, many would be the first in their families to go to college. I am inspired by these students every day and want to make my lessons as engaging and rigorous as possible. They made the choice to attend this school and devote this time to their education. Now it's in my hands to give them the best I can.
