Most fiction books tend to be geared toward female readers. Although I try to have a variety of titles in my classroom collection, my books for my male students is not as plentiful. I teach 7th grade English is a rural mid Pennsylvania school district. So much focus is on our state standards and exams...and I try to balance all of that writing/reading with books for pleasure. Evidence shows that if I can entice my male (and female) readers to TRY a new author or genre, many times they are hooked and want more of the same type. The problem is that I need to have a greater collection of titles. I believe that this will encourage them to become lifelong readers which will greatly impact them in their higher school grades as well as college years.
