In my school, approximately 95% of students qualify for reduced or free lunch. They are mostly Hispanic English learners who came to Kindergarten with little or no English, and not much in the way of literacy (computer or otherwise) in their homes. Parents are immigrants who want their children to get an education and succeed in their lives. Breaking the cycle of poverty and all its pitfalls is difficult, but not impossible for these children! My fourth graders are poised to exit the English as a Second Language Program and I want them to have access to the tools they need to succeed in the regular classroom and in life.
