Teaching students with Autism Spectrum Disorder is a challenge. In order to deliver the content, you must have full instructional control. In order to get their attention, redirecting and finding ways to gain attention is essential. They don't always have a good day or feel one hundred percent. They have instructional needs that only an educator in this field would understand. As their teacher and knowing what they are capable of, I know they can reach certain goals. I need to facilitate that missing link in the classroom by inspiring them and peaking their interest to bring them to the next level. I have seen many of my students have that breaking point and achieving the next step. As a teacher in the classroom and on the ice for figure skating, the biggest reward is to see the student make progress and to read the confidence level on their face. Many of my students have severe behaviors and communication disorders but I know when I've reached them. It shines right through.
