Many of my students are low-income. There is a 50% free-and-reduced price lunch population. The entire district has about 530 students with slightly more males than females. About 260 students attend the junior/senior high school. Eighty-five percent of students are white/Caucasian and about twelve percent are Hispanic. The rural school is located about 45 minutes from the nearest city. In their spare time, students enjoy playing sports and riding four-wheel ATVs. Many students enjoy outdoor sports such as fishing and hiking. My students are good citizens showing a great deal of respect. As a first-year teacher, I am happy to report that I have had no discipline problems to report so far. However, these students struggle with math. For example, only fifteen percent of the current freshmen class passed last year's end-of-course exam. My goal is to support students through motivation, support, and creative lessons using math journaling as a way to keep students organized.
