My students are sweet and kind children. They live in a high poverty area. (85% are free or reduced lunch) They live in one family homes with extended families. Sometimes they live in basement apartments. They want to learn for many reasons, but mostly to help their own family. They love to read and some even like math. They come to school and work hard in English then they go home and speak Spanish. Most of my students don't have anyone at home to assist them with homework. Many don't see their parents until the weekend. The parents are supportive and want their children to do well, but feel frustrated that they can't help their children with their work.
