Learning outcomes:
Students will learn to identify vocabulary to build a stronger foundation for reading through game play. The Word Witt game helps build phonemic awareness through spelling and word recognition and can be played with the whole class.
Students are learning this so they can improve their accuracy and fluency by expanding their vocabulary to become voracious readers. A Play on Words game is a Parent's Choice Award, that can be used whole class to help motivate learning vocabulary in a fun way.
Students will realize they are building a vocabulary as they play the games and improve their scores. Word Spiel and Last Word are both games that can be used whole class to help students with phonics and multisyllabic word recognition.
Students will learn to work within different group settings (including small groups, partners, and individually) on building up their vocabulary and communicating with others. Bananagrams is a word game that can be used with small groups while Think Fun Word A Round can be used with the whole class as and A Little Wordy with just two players at a time. Boggle can even be used in a center with just one player, playing against time, while learning to build words and increase their vocabulary.
Students will experience hands-on learning, rather than remote and digital learning through board and card games. A Little Wordy game encourages dialogue between two players as they have to give clues to unscramble the word. Word Play is a board game that encourages hands-on learning, and can be used whole class.
