About my class

My students range in age and each one has his/her own personality. Many of my students only communicate by reaching or screaming until we guess what the desired item is. Without a way to communicate many of them are unable to tell another person simple wants and needs. My school is a public school in an Abbot district in New Jersey. We have close to 30 students in the program and want to provide a communication method which can be taken home so the students can communicate with their families. My students often have severe behaviors which can stem from a lack of communication. We work to train the parents but the majority are not able to afford and do not have the skills necessary to create the materials needed to individualize a communication system, so we do it for them. Tasks in the classroom are broken down into discrete pieces and taught one at a time. The students learn by completing a task and earning a reward. Knowing what motivates them is vital to their success.
