My school has over 750 Pre-K to Fifth grade students. Over 85% of our students qualify for free or reduced price lunch. I have the pleasure of teaching 700 students a week. Every Kindergarten to Fifth grade class comes to the library once a week. I read books; they learn about library skills; and they get to check out a book they would like to read. Teachers tell me all the time how excited the students are about coming to the library. However, I have noticed that I do not have books that my energetic five and six year olds can read. They are able to check out picture books, but the stories are too hard for them to read on their own, and I want to change that. I want them to have the option to check out books on their reading level.
