I am a high school history teacher at Miami Jackson Senior High School, one of the lowest performing schools in the Miami-Dade Public School System. As much as I want to teach U.S. History in my classroom, I have also accepted that my class will always need to have a greater focus on the skill of reading. Across the board, I have noticed that many of my students don't like reading because they are forced to read materials they are given in their classes. As such, I asked all of my students to name books they were interested in challenging them all that if I got a book they wanted, they would have to read it. They all with excitement willingly obliged not expecting me to follow through. My goal is for all my students to be on reading level by the time they graduate. Along the way, they will learn and understand U.S. History and it's importance on how we live today through various primary and secondary sources.
