The students that I teach are ninth grade repeaters that have to pass the End of Course Biology exam in order to graduate from high school. They have lost credit for different reasons including skipping, pregnancy, incarceration, deaths in families, or parents that seem to move them from one place to another causing them to lose credit. They attend our school to make up the credits they lost as freshmen. Studies show that we need to intervene with these students while they are freshmen or they might not graduate. They have a lot of gaps in their learning. I am trying to fill in their gaps so that hey can pass their exam and graduate from high school. One of the big problems that my students have is lack of motivation to learn. I think that they can be motivated if I present them with real hands-on activities that they can relate to. We are not an alternative school for discipline problems but some of our students do have some discipline issues. They are good kids that need help.
