It is because of my students that I am still teaching today. They are the reason I arrive to the school early and leave late. Not because I have to, but because I choose to. Our high school population is very small with only 77 students in the school. Students come from many walks of life: wealthy, poor, skateboarders, bull riders, geeks, jocks. Though on the outside my students may appear different, inside they all have one thing in common: they are small town kids. Being raised in a small town has allowed them to form relationships with one another like siblings would. They are respective of teachers, coaches and other adults in the community. Being raised in a small town has also lead to my students living a sheltered life. They are comfortable here, too comfortable. This is why I challenge my students to think outside of the box! I expose students to learning that is real and relevant. I want my students to be on-edge in my classroom, not comfortable.
