Next year our students will get to participate in our year long Battle of the Books (B.O.B). For the third year in a row, our 6th through 8th grade students will choose a winner from our 16 literary contenders in two separate divisions. Our open division will include 10 titles in a variety of genres, including historical fiction, graphic novels, sci-fi/fantasy, and realistic fiction. In addition to our open division, for the first time we are adding a second division with more mature, young adult titles in our 8th grade only G.O.A.T (Greatest of All Time) bracket. Titles for B.O.B. have been chosen based on their literary merit, their grade level appropriateness, and their general popularity. Our main goal is to get our students reading outside of school and beyond the reading they are required to do for assignments. According to commonsensemedia.org, reading for pleasure "builds vocabulary and improves reading comprehension, writing, spelling, grammar, and knowledge of the world. It also boosts test scores." We want to offer our students page-turners that will introduce them to new authors and genres and keep them reading on their own into high school and beyond. Students will have an opportunity to read the novels they are most interested in before voting begins. We will use a variety of ways to introduce the titles, including book talks and book trailers. Students will first pick the winners based on a simple tournament bracket. Each week, the books with the least amount of votes will be eliminated until we have a champion.
