My student population is diverse. One challenge is that we have many second language learners with parents of first generation immigrants. Another big challenge is that we are at 80% poverty. The poverty rate has risen nearly 4% every year the past 3 years. Most kids, when they arrive at school it is the most consistent environment they can depend on. This does not mean all kids of poverty have terrible parents but the parents are dealing with lack of education or cannot speak English, or a criminal past. The teachers at my school work very hard to provide an environment with a culture for learning, dreaming, and expecting great things out of life if armed with knowledge and an education. I just love these kids!
