Giving any child with a reading disability phonics knowledge in their toolbox allows them an advantage. It helps them learn that the sounds in spoken words relate to the patterns of letters in written words. Phonics lessons paired with word recognition (sight words) are a valuable aspect of a basal reading program and useful for my range of students in grades 2-5 and at a reading level of PreK-1st grade. For my special needs students, manipulatives help expend their boundless energy as well as focus their attention on the lesson. These materials will enrich our phonics learning and help our classroom be a fun, active learning space.
