Our school is located in the heart of middle TN. The students and families in the community are rich in culture and diversity, but most live in extreme poverty. 97% of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch. 60% of our school population is learning English as a second language. Even with the odds stacked against them, the families in this community come together to make education and parent involvement a priority. It is heartwarming to see such dedication from the parents, students, and teachers in this area. As a first grade homeroom and ESL teacher, I am challenged by these factors in my instruction. Teaching kids with limited experiences, limited English, and, quite frankly, the limited attention spans of first graders :), I need an engaging way to hold their attention while providing them with the support they need to be successful.
