After twenty years in various industries, I returned to my Alma Mater as a teacher. What had been a school of excellence when I left was now struggling with poverty, transience, decreasing test scores and graduation rates, and, perhaps worst of all, a general sense of apathy bordering on hopelessness. Students weren't "bad," but had very little faith in the prospects of education, especially here. Things have begun to change, though. The 1975 building has undergone its first substantial remodel and we have dramatically improved technological resources. We have a new principal, many new teachers, and, in general, a burgeoning attitude of success. Students are more focused and seem to recognize the opportunities for success they have. I don't want to sound as if I am sugar-coating our turnaround. We have a long way to go. There is, however, a distinct difference in the halls and classrooms. Knowing they can read is one thing. I hope to help them reach the point that they want to read.
