The reading, writing, and math center items I am requesting will help my students work independently in hands-on centers. First graders are very active and therefore, cannot sit and listen to lectures as older students must do. They need activities that are both rigorous and kid-friendly. The vast majority of my teaching comes through teacher-led small groups. While this is great for differentiating instruction and helping students on their individual levels, it leaves the students at their seats with idle time. The Reading and Writing Instant Learning center will be used as an independent center for a group of four students to practice writing prompts and reading skills (phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, etc.) while I am working with students in differentiated small group lessons. The Independent Math Activities kit will give students a chance to work independently at their seats while awaiting their turn at the teacher-led small group math center. This math activity kit would replace the now used worksheets by providing more meaningful, hands-on activities for students to complete. The activities are correlated with our current math standards. The sight word and ready to write activities I am requesting will also be used as seat work during teacher led small group time, thus eliminating the need for worksheets that are not kid friendly. In the past, I have used many copied worksheets trying to keep their attention and teach them the skills needed. While this has allowed students exposure to skills needed, it is NOT hands-on. Think back to your days in elementary school. Do you remember the worksheets? I bet you don't but I do bet that you remember a game or activity that you played in class. Centers provide the experiences needed to master skills and become life-long learners! Please consider donating to our class!
