I have a classroom of kindergarten and first grade children that have autism. Some days, just coming to school and facing the sensory input here is more than they can stand. For these days we provide a sensory room that acts as a "the calm in the seas." Children with autism have heightened senses that act as superpowers and as dreaded anchors. Part of our day involves calming these sensory overloads and re-centering our kids to put them back into a learning mode. Often all our students need is a few minutes to hide under a weighted blanket and escape. They might read a book, or need to play with some fidgets. This sensory reset makes them viable scholars, when done right. Our school is an ESE hub school, meaning we have almost as many ESE children as we do regular ed. Next year we have three autism classrooms, which attests to the growth in the autism rates in our country. It is our job, as educators, to empower these children and make them viable members of society.
