The students at our school represent an extremely diverse population; ethnically, culturally, linguistically and socio-economically. Nearly 70% of the students in our school qualify for free or reduced lunch, and over 65% are students of color. Many of our students come from families for whom English is not their first language. The school's diversity creates an environment in which students can learn from one another, learn to respect one another, and develop the skills needed for success in a diverse world. All of my students are inquisitive children eager to learn. They are held to a high standard at our school, and we provide the challenges and supports to help our students succeed. One of my most important goals is that each of my students leave first grade with the skills to be successful as they continue through their academic careers. Strong literacy skills are crucial.
