I work with 85-100 Intellectually Disabled high school students. They range from 14 years old to almost 20 years old and are in 9th to 12th grade. They are in a self-contained environment but interact with the General Education students as often as possible. None of my students are functioning above a 3rd grade level in math, and many do not understand the basic concepts of addition and subtraction. Some can not yet count to 20 correctly. Using concrete objects to represent mathematical concepts is essential for these students. Some of my higher functioning students are so turned off by Math that they walk in the class and quit before they start. Making math fun and interactive is one way I've found to get them interested and build up some about of confidence. Interactive notebooks allow them an organizational strategy they can use in the future along with a way of expressing how they are feeling about the concept. Students are able to express themselves in pictures or words.
