I teach 6th grade math. My classroom currently has very little technology. I have 2 working desktops, 3 laptops that only worked when plugged in, and my teacher laptop. I have so many opportunities to teach these kids using resources online (Schoology, Khan Academy, Moby Max, Prodigy, YouTube, Kahoot and even an online textbook!) and yet I can barely get 4 kids on a computer at a time. We have access to programs which can pinpoint exactly what standards and concepts the kids are struggling with and yet I can not utilize these programs with my kids because they do not have the devices needed! My students are smart- but behind their peers because of limited access to technology. I have at least 25-30 students that have no internet. I have probably 10 kids (maybe more) who have two homes (one with mom, one with dad) and only have Internet in one home. It is sad to hear " I can't get online until next week when I see my mom". My students have all made gains this year- despite this limited access to technology. I know that with technology I can get my students up to grade level, competitive with their peers. My students live in the generation where the jobs they will hold one day don't even exist yet. That scares me. I am sure that the majority of those jobs will involve both technology and math. Without a STRONG math background and technology background- my students will not be able to pull themselves out of the cycle of poverty that many are in. I want to help my students be competitive in the future career fields they may choose. Please help them access all of those wonderful resources that we have now to help teach them MATH...
