All of my students are identified as having learning challenges in reading and/or writing. These challenges are often accompanied by a lack of motivation when it comes to schoolwork. Our school, located in a high poverty area, focuses on academic proficiency benchmarks. District mandated writing requirements along with writing goals in their Individualized Education Programs are rigorous and standards-based but they are not always relevant to students' interests and needs in their "real" lives. One state standard does allow for activities where students produce writing in which the development and style are appropriate to the task, purpose, and audience. I am seizing this standard for my students! I envision a classroom where students are excited about choosing their audiences and what they want to produce. The "Write Stuff" project will serve as a catalyst for promoting writing that is still standards-based but is authentic, novel, and fun!
