The majority of my students are economically disadvantaged kids of color. My school has more grandparents raising children than any other school in my district of 50,000 students. Many of my students are learning to speak English at the same time they are learning to read and write. Most have had no preschool experience, and have little experience with any kind of literacy/math at home. My job is to get them functioning at grade level as quickly as possible, so they don't fall so far behind that they become discouraged and drop out. Technology will continue to be a key resource in their world, but most have no access to paper books, let alone computers.
