I teach first grade in an older, urban school that is deemed a high-poverty school. This year my 24 students are struggling to learn how to read. Five of them are two years below grade level; nine are in an Indian Education support class; three are in special education; and three are in ESL class. They are wonderful, curious children who want to learn. At my school, over 50% of the children are eligible for free and reduced breakfast and lunch but we are not a Title 1 school.
