My students come from a poor community where 85% of them are on free/reduced price lunch. Many do not have computers in their homes. It is very difficult for them to learn computer skills when there isn't a way for them to view a computer and receive instruction from an educator. I would use the laptop to research vocabulary words and unfamiliar concepts. I would teach them how to sift through advertisements to locate educational sites. If the children are reading literature about Africa, we could research Africa together on the laptop hooked up to the Elmo and view images of its culture, agriculture, and climate. I could access kid oriented videos about important topics like September 11 and why we honor our military.
