Research and personal experiences have shown students with autism seek out "pressure" as a calming technique when upset and stressed. The students will ask others to squeeze their hands, wrap them in a blanket, or use a item of weight to increase the feeling of security. Many times the student will ask for "more" since the human component of the pressure is different in each situation. This steamroller will give students the opportunity to meet their sensory needs and be able to adjust the pressure to a steady consistent feel each time. The construction is hardy so the steamroller can be used for many years for many students. The opportunity for a student with autism and intellectual disabilities to be self-determined in their own life is powerful.
