Our school has been labeled by the Florida Department of Education as "persistently lowest-achieving," which means we are also persistently lowest-funded. Yet, instead of receiving helpful resources, we are denied resources in lieu of schools that perform better on standardized tests. But how can we expect to perform when we do not have the resources to perform with? When my students are solving dimensional analysis problems, we use our cellphone calculators to derive an answer. Often times, cellphones do not take the standard order of operations into consideration, and we end up with a classroom full of different answers. Usually the answers depend less on accuracy and more on whether you are team Samsung Galaxy, iPhone, or Android.
