Numerous studies have shown that students with access to a listening library develop 1) a greater interest in reading, 2) improved literacy skills and comprehension and 3) increased vocabulary and syntax levels. Our classroom is fortunate to have 10 iPads that we use at a listening center during literacy stations. Students use various applications to listen to stories that are at their "just right" reading level. Students in second grade develop foundational reading skills that will aide in their lifelong formal, as well as personal, educational experience. Our classroom is in a Title-1 school so many of our families do not have the resources to provide headphones for their student. I would like to have them available so students can listen on the iPads individually. The headphones would also decrease the distraction to other students that are working on another literacy station, like writing, work work, read-to-self and small groups with the teacher.
