My students live in suburban neighborhoods and travel by bus to our newly constructed school within one mile of the hurricane-protection levee surrounded by cypress swamps. This science magnet school requires students to investigate an independent research project to earn Honors credit in their core science courses. I want to offer projects that include exploration of nature in our backyard. These curious and dedicated students think that science takes place in labs; but I want to expand their questions to include investigations of the swamps, cypress trees, and wonderful wildlife at our door.
