In our large rural school, 78% of the students receive free or reduced lunch. They come into my kindergarten classroom excited and eager to learn. When I see these students leave after 5th grade many look defeated. More than 30% come from single parent households, or are being raised by grandparents. The grown-ups in their lives often don't have the time, energy, or literacy level to read to them each day. Many of the parents/guardians work long hours in several different jobs to provide food, shelter, and clothing for their children. Books, art supplies, and toys are considered luxury items. In my classroom many students have colored with markers, painted, completed a puzzle, or explored in a sandbox for the very first time ever!
