My students are curious about the world, love technology and get excited when they can experience science "hands-on." Many of the sixth grade students at my school have been identified as low-preforming. They are at risk of not doing well in high school or then not going on to college. Research shows challenging project based learning like our proposed "Solar Winds" project, which includes science, technology, engineering and math, inspire students to develop deeper understanding and interest in science and math. Students will see that they can participate in effecting real solutions to real problems that they will be facing in their lives. With this experience, it is likely that my students will see the importance of continuing their education in order to pursue careers in the fields of science and technology.
