Play, play, play... what all young children want to do all day. I would like to implement more play-based therapy into my daily speech and language groups. My students need a play-based therapy approach to develop their speech and language skills. Simple materials such as camping toys, food trucks and baby dolls, will help motivate my students to work on their speech and language skills, that can be frustrating to work on. Research shows that through play-based therapy experiences, children are able to carry learned skills beyond the speech/language classroom and therapy sessions. Pretend play helps to improve the development of verbal and nonverbal language skills, as well as social skills and peer interactions. The use of simple toys allows the students open-ended opportunities to learn to navigate the needed academic and social language skills that will help them be successful through all stages of their lives.
