My students are used to people having low expectations for them and sometimes act the part. However, I have seen first hand that they are more aware of their situation than many children attending middle school in the United States. In a school in south Florida where 98 percent of students receive free/reduced lunch benefits and only twenty four percent of students read on grade level, sometimes these students can feel overlooked. Quite honestly, many times they are. It is no wonder that my students appreciate a teacher that cares about them through engaging and purposeful instruction. A teacher that cares means so much more to my students than it did to me when I was in middle school. Sometimes their teacher is their only advocate. The school has recently changed administrations and is in the midst of a transformation, but the funds still do not permit the resources that are needed to give our students the advantages that they need.
